ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kent Wilkens was born
in Nottingham, England, while his father was stationed there with
the RCAF. The family then moved to back to Ontario where Kent
spent most of his childhood and teens.
Since early childhood Kent was interested in drawing and
painting, dabbling in charcoal, pastels, oils, etc., trying his
hand at everything from psychedelic and abstract to portraits.
The seventies saw his interests in the arts fade as
his major passion was taken up by motocross racing. After working
in the oilfields of Alberta, Kent then moved to Southern
California, where he pursued a career in home remodeling, design
and drafting, and then owned and operated a used Christian
bookstore until 1986.
On returning to Ontario, he soon regained his
interest in painting. 1988 was the first year his works were
offered for sale. In the spring of 1990 he released his first
limited edition print, and to date has published over eighty
reproductions of his original paintings.
While in the Middle East painting a mural in a chapel, Kent met
his wife, Rachael, who was from Australia. Kent and Rachael have
raised six children, two them are in University or working in
Canada, while currently Rachael and the other four children are
studying in Australia.
Kent realized early on that he would not be known for
the number of paintings but for the best paintings he did, so he
continues chasing that "smile on the Mona Lisa" looking for that
special something that sets the work apart.
He looks at each of his paintings as a challenge, “to
attempt to present what God has already painted, using His palette
of light, on the canvas of His Creation.”
